Tea Experiment 2: Mango and Green tea
So it was getting on evening and I figured I should do my tea experiments with a less caffeinated variety. Fortunately, I have this green tea:
Tumblr media
in keeping with the theme of the blog, it's like five years old.
Scrounging around for something to put in it, I found a bag of dried mango from Costco and chopped up a little bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Result: Not awesome. With a little bit (maybe a teaspoon) I couldn't really taste the mango. With about double that it tasted like warm, watered-down mango juice.
The five-year old green tea was pretty good tho! It had a slightly nutty taste that reminded me of barley tea a little.
Old green tea and dried mango: 3/10

This is the same Tea Blog file, but amplified. Some of you let me know that they had been finding it hard to follow the original. This one will hopefully provide more clarity. Enjoy. Leave feedback.

Enjoying about 5Gs of Puerh Junky’s Mincemeat (which is now out of stock). It’s a 7536 from 2007. I reviewed this one a while back, early in my tea journey, and I still like it! Maybe even more so now. I’m on spring break right now, enjoying the 10 days-ish away from school.

The Daily Tea #2
gunpowder green tea with jasmine
Tumblr media
The packaging got me on this one. The Tao of Tea's organic pearl gunpowder loose leaf green tea is beautiful. I think I will be getting this brand more often not only because of the quality of the tea itself but because of the packaging. A nice sturdy round tin sealed with a sticker that pops cleanly and easily when turned. Underneath the circular top is a beautiful metallic tin top with a small circular handle and their logo embossed on it.
Be careful! When I popped the lid off, I lost quite a bit of tea from the impact of me yanking the lid off.
Why didn't I get green tea with jasmine together? A couple reasons. I wanted a good green tea on its own. And I wanted to have some jasmine on hand for other blends in the future.
I brewed it carefully - knowing green tea is finicky to brew. Don't boil the water. But make sure it's hot. Don't let the leaves soak for too long. I used a tea strainer that sits on top so I knew I wouldn't brew it for too long.
Now on to the taste.
Because I added the jasmine, it smelled and tasted very floral right off the bat. I did add honey to this. A strong green tea flavor lingered underneath the jasmine, grounding it as the jasmine kept it bright. The honey kept the bitterness at bay when the jasmine flavor went away. As I got closer down to the bottom of the cup, it got more bitter and I just tasted more of the honey. I wonder how I can keep the jasmine flavor to last to the bottom of the cup. Hmmm... (any tips let me know). Perhaps a different strainer and equal parts green tea and jasmine...
Overall, I really liked both flavors. Green tea with jasmine is one of my favorite tea blends and this Tao of Tea is one of my new favorite tea brands. This was a good strong green tea to add to my collection - good for when I'm in the need of a light boost in energy and alertness and antioxidants.
All in all, a good purchase and a delightful cup of tea.

Tea experiment 3: Black tea with chili pepper
Back on my tea experiment roll. Today I decided to chuck some dried chili pepper in there. I once had a box of herbal tea that had chili peppers in it and it was pretty good, except it called itself 'detox tea' and I got no time for pseudoscience.
If this was a different kind of blog I'd research different types of dried chili peppers and maybe do lots of taste tests, blah blah blah. I even have a surprisingly large collection of different pepper varieties because my partner isn't a 'put whatever you have in there' cook like I am:

Nope! Instead we're going with choice #2: this bag of mystery chili peppers. I'm pretty sure I got these dried peppers at an Indian food store and that's all the information I have about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A small chunk of mystery dried chili pepper (about a thumbnail) in with maybe a teaspoon of my mystery black tea.
Actually this is amazing! The mystery chili pepper doesn't have a lot of flavor, but capsicum gives it a really nice tingling in your mouth and throat after taste (after sensation?). I bet this would be really awesome if I had a cold, maybe an herbal tea with ginger and lemon.
Mystery tea with mystery chili pepper: 9/10

2021 Chapo | Heicha | White2tea
Tumblr media
Have had this sample sitting in my stash for too long! This tea is interesting to me, especially as a tea noob. The leaves look a lot like white tea to me, but much greener and smaller. Rustic is a good word for the look and aroma of this one. Lots of hay smell and some of the aroma from golden flowers is there too. A bit bread-like. Gives off a lot of feelings of playing outside in the spring weather. Once hitting this tea with hot water I found all kinds of things in it… Sticks, nuts, seeds, what else? A little piece of plastic too. The liquor has a nice mouth feel, very smooth and light. Bits of the nut have broken off and into the leaf so any flavors I might be getting are probably from that too! Out of all the things I’ve found in my teas, this is probably the biggest seed/nut. I was surprised how much I like this tea, the golden flower flavor is really nice with the much lighter — almost yellow tea liquor. Chapo is a liubao heicha, but it’s not very dark at all. Very nice golden liquor color that’s lightly fogged up by the rustic blend of leaf. The flavors are very reminiscent of hay and autumn leaves. This tea made me quite a bit tea high too. Hit me pretty hard and fast. A brick of this doesn’t go for a lot, so I recommend snagging a sample and giving it a try. It’s definitely worth it for the price if this is something up your alley.
